Girls to open salon after winning top hairdressing awards.

Two Scots sisters are living proof their family is a cut above. Hairdressers Bianca and Lauren Gray have just scooped a clutch of top awards at the hairdressing Oscars. Bianca, 20, won the National and Open titles while Lauren, 22, picked up first places in both Colour and Bridal. But today the duo revealed their success was partly down to mum and dad – and big sister Natalie. The Cumbernauld sisters learned the trade at mum Norma and dad William’s salon – Gray’s International in the Central Hotel in Glasgow. Natalie – also a hairdresser – was the model at the awards last weekend in Glasgow.

Now the girls are set to open their own salon in Airdrie, also Gray’s International. “We’ve never had any pressure from our parents to join the profession”, said Bianca. “But when we were younger we would go to their salon on Saturdays and help out for a bit of pocket money.” Last weekends championships, run by the National Hair Federation (NHF) attracted more than 100 entries. Bianca was Scottish junior champion at 15 and last year was the first Scot to collect UK student of the year. Lauren was youngest winner of the Scottish National title at 17. “Natalie does not enter the competitions. She is happy to model and let us do the hard work”, said Lauren.

The three will have to keep the scissors sharp because there are more Grays waiting to pick up a hairdryer – sisters India, 15, and Ebony, 9. Hamish Wilson, Scottish NHF organiser who has a salon in Hamilton said: “The Gray family did very well and it was great to see the Open title go to Scotland.”
